‘The Other Art Fair’ presented by Saatchi Art brings a multitude of dynamic and affordable artworks by independent artists from around the globe to audiences via its online and in-person presentations across major cities. From 12 to 15 October, The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve will host the 2023 Sydney iteration of ‘The Other Art Fair’ making art accessible and providing a face-to-face opportunity for the public and participating artists to interact throughout the vibrant art-filled exposé.
Over 130 emerging and established artists working across a variety of creative styles and mediums including painting, photography, digital media, sculpture, performance and more will gather at the 120-metre-long underground sandstone and concrete event and exhibition space, The Cutaway.
The three-day event will deliver a kaleidoscope of colour and artistic excellence with hundreds of artworks on display and for sale at affordable prices, as well as immersive installations, performances and other fun and creative encounters to delight art lovers. Live DJs, a cocktail bar, and coffee and food stalls will round off ‘The Other Art Fair’ with a vibrant festive swing.
Current topics and various themes such as climate change and the environment, sexuality and identity, the human form, the politics of war and conflict, cultural diversity and other stories will ruminate throughout the fair. Liz Payne composes stunning abstract imaginations using paint, textiles, beads, text and embroidery where brightly coloured shapes, bold patterns and rich textures break the rules of predictability and convention. Mixed media artist Laurie Franklin’s reflections on soft plastics put emphasis on our growing concern for the planet, and Rachel Hayhurst’s abstract imaginings render the beauty and characteristics of the natural world and its unique ecosystems.
Philippines-born artist Peter Francisco will exhibit portraits of people from the Ifugao tribe who live in the mountainous region of the Philippines, and Hilton Owen brings realist, abstract and figurative elements together in dramatic contrasts of colour, shape and form to reimagine perceptions of contemporary life, beauty and fashion.
Gauri Torgalker, an emerging artist of Indian origin reimagines the Australian landscape drawing inspiration from “personal memory and narratives inspired by Indian textiles, folklore and miniature painting.” “My practice explores the intrinsic need for immigrants to make cultural associations in new communities,” the artist states.
Behnoush Barzegar presents sculptures and painted works inspired by the Australian skies that she dreamt beneath as a child. And when she returned to her homeland of Iran she says, “I dragged the skies and colors with me in my luggage…That’s when my inspiration created my art pieces.”
