The world’s first Bluey exhibition will open at ACMI in Melbourne next year in collaboration with the gallery, BBC Studios and Ludo Studio. The show will offer a behind the scenes look at the creation of the beloved animated series, for real life!
ACMI says the exhibition celebrates the warmth, humour and craft of the award-winning show, and plan to tour the presentation internationally after its exciting Aussie debut. Incredibly, since Bluey hit our screens in 2018 the show now airs in 140 countries and has several times been rated the most streamed show on platforms such as Disney+. While Bluey is very in demand, audiences will have to wait for this special exhibition until mid-2027.
Similarly, we have also learnt that in August 2027 the Bluey Movie will be released, courtesy of the team efforts of BBC Studios, Walt Disney Studios and Brisbane’s Ludo Studio.
Joe Brumm, the creator of Bluey, will write and direct the movie. He’s said “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together.”
Brumm signed off as Director of Bluey at the end of Season 3, with the longer and heart-warming episode The Sign. He is working on the film now, as confirmed in his online statement “Bluey news – some good, some trifficult”;
“Bluey has completely changed my life. It’s been an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can really put into words. To walk away from it while it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some but, for now, I am finding it difficult to reach back genuinely into that four to six year old world and write authentically.
My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with that wonderful group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope Bluey on their CV is a badge of pride for them.
To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the film.”
Fellow home-grown talent Amber Naismith, who has contributed to ‘Happy Feet’, ‘The Lego Movie’, and ‘The Lego Batman Movie’, will be the producer and Richard Jeffrey (who worked on series 1 to 3) will be the co-Director. Joff Bush is also on the project, composing the music. Some of the original voice actors have been announced as booked in, for example Melanie Zanetti as Chilli and David McCormack (From Australian rock band, Custard) as Bandit. Bluey and Bingo have not been announced, potentially as their child-actor names have always been anonymous.
After the film takes a turn in theatres it will be released on ABC iView.
